STOCKHOLM DESIGN WEEK 2020
The Archive
Gabriel Tan co-curated with Hanna Nova Beatrice Ariake's exploration of shared Japanese and Scandinavian design aesthetics at Stockholm's historic Gamla Riksarkivet, marking the first design exhibition ever staged in the rarely accessible 1890 National Archives building. Styled by Annaleena Leino, The Archive brought together four distinguished design brands: Japanese furniture brand Ariake, Japanese porcelain producer 2016/Arita, alongside Danish houses LE KLINT and Friends and Founders, highlighting the "shared aesthetics and values" between the two regions rooted in craftsmanship, love of nature, and seasonal materials.
The exhibition introduced Ariake's 2020 collection, featuring Gabriel's Rin sofa alongside new pieces by Note Design Studio, Norm Architects, and Rui Alves, all crafted in Saga Prefecture using traditional Japanese techniques. The atmospheric setting was enhanced by custom soundtracks from composer Yasuharu Okochi, who recorded the actual sounds of furniture-making and porcelain production at the respective Japanese factories, allowing visitors to experience the warmth and authenticity of traditional craftsmanship within the historic archive's grand halls.
